OFRA is an organization whose mission is to help socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers achieve a living with their farm or ranch. In addition, they also educate the public about the importance of sustainable agriculture—economic success, environmental stewardship and improved quality of life of people and communities. This education is done by giving farmers and ranchers the tools, skills and knowledge through hands on training, classes, and field days. With these trainings the farmers and ranchers are able to make their farm or ranch financially successful. Membership to OFRA is open to anyone who has an interest in the education of small farmers, the strengthening of rural communities and the production of sustainably produced, local food. OFRA has provided mentoring to new livestock producers for three years. Mentors are paired with mentees based on livestock species, geographic location, and educational need. Farm visits to both mentor and mentee farms occur over a year’s period, with phone conversations in between times to discuss mentees needs and problems. Former mentees have the opportunity to become mentors after at least one year of mentoring with training on the agricultural topic.
OFRA membership dues are:

Build a Hoop House: Free Workshop in Sapulpa, Oklahoma – September 11, 2010
A free workshop on Saturday, September 11, offers a chance to learn about hoop houses, and get some hands on experience building a low-cost version, at Belcher’s Bucket of Berries, a U-pick farm near Sapulpa, Oklahoma. From Bees to Honey: October 3-7, 2010 at Heifer Ranch
Learn what it takes to raise bees by helping with our fall honey harvest. Remove honey boxes from the hives and extract the honey. Inspect and prepare the hives for winter. Prepare honey for selling – bottle the honey, seal the bottles in melted beeswax and label for sale. Levels of physical activity include some levels of lifting and moderate amounts of walking.
Livestock Health Care: October 3-7, 2010 at Heifer Ranch
Learn about the routine care of livestock, such as cattle and sheep, while you help us complete our fall livestock health checks. Weigh livestock, trim hooves, paint brand and ear-tattoo sheep, pregnancy check cattle and evaluate body condition and general animal health. Perform daily livestock chores and other duties such as moving and setting up temporary fences.
